Sports & Outdoors Reviews & Comparisons

Fitness gear, GPS watches, water bottles, hiking gear, recovery tools, cycling. Tested where it's supposed to be used.

The most useful gear in this category is the gear that disappears when you're using it. A GPS watch should track without prompting and survive a spring storm. A water bottle should hold ice water for a workday and keep its lid sealed in your bag. A trail running shoe should grip on wet rock without rolling your ankle on the descent. We test products in their actual environments because the difference between a good and bad product in this category usually shows up at mile six, hour three, or rep eighty.

We're skeptical of marketing in this category for a reason. "Tactical-grade," "military-grade," and "professional-grade" are unregulated phrases. Battery life claims are usually measured under best-case conditions you'll never replicate. Waterproof ratings vary wildly between brands. We try to test claims rather than repeat them. Where a product genuinely performs better than its competitors, we'll say so. Where it doesn't, we'll say so even more clearly. The goal is to keep you from buying gear you'll resent halfway through your first real use.
